Plain packaging takes cool out of tobacco (New Zealand)

Thursday 15th September, 2011

The Public Health Association is pushing for plain packaging of tobacco to be introduced as soon as possible.

Executive officer Gay Keating says the association has written to the Government asking it to follow Australia’s lead.

She says the idea is getting a lot of support from Maori, and it follows on from the recommendations of the Maori Affairs Select Committee inquiry into the tobacco industry.

Dr Keating says cigarette packs are as recognisable as Coke bottles, so making them look boring may mean children will be less likely to think smoking is cool.
