Retailers selling e-cigarettes are being urged to take extra care from next month (October) when new regulations governing the age of purchasers come into force.

It will be illegal from 1 October for outlets in England and Wales to sell e-cigs and related products to anyone under 18. The new regulations cover all nicotine inhaling products and their component parts, such as replacement cartridges and refills.

The proxy purchasing offence for tobacco – when an adult buys on behalf of an under-age consumer – will be extended to e-cigs. A fixed penalty for proxy purchasing of e-cigs is being introduced with fines of £90 for any adult attempting to make a purchase.
