E-cig explosions blamed for facial injuries, severe burns

Dozens of lawsuits allege serious injuries caused by exploding batteries

The exploding cigar was a mainstay of slapstick humor back in the day. But there’s nothing funny about an exploding e-cigarette, according to those who’ve had the experience.

Dozens of lawsuits have been filed by consumers who say their e-cigs blew up, causing serious and expensive injuries. The Food and Drug Administration has found 134 reports of overheating, fires, and explosions of the devices in the U.S. between 2009 and January 2016, the Wall Street Journal reports. The FDA is phasing in rules covering the devices, which will eventually require government approval before they can be marketed.

Most of the lawsuits allege that the explosions and injuries were caused by the lithium-ion batteries used in the devices, which are mostly made by Chinese companies. The industry argues that the number of explosions and fires is small considering how many of the devices are in use and says many of the mishaps are the result of user error.

Severe burns

A jury in Riverside, Calif., recently awarded $1.9 million in damages to a woman who suffered severe burns when her e-cigarette exploded while hooked up to a car charger. Like most such suits, hers named the retailer, distributor, and wholesaler rather than the manufacturer, since it’s difficult to sue an overseas company.

The Journal article notes another case, that of Rachel Berven of Modesto, Calif. She had been using her vaping device — as the e-cigs are called — for about a year. One day she inserted a new battery and when she fired the device up, it exploded, ripping a hole in her mouth and spewing acid across her body, leaving her with three cracked teeth and scars on her legs and elsewhere.

In another gruesome case, a school counselor in California alleges that his e-cig exploded and tore through his eye, smashing two cheekbones and starting a fire.

Joseph Cavins said he was working at his computer on April 15 when his e-cig “suddenly exploded, striking Joseph in the left eye, continuing past his head, hitting the ceiling, ricocheting off the wall and landing on top of the computer station, where it started a fire,” according to his complaint in Orange County Court, Courthouse News Service reported. He has sued four distributors and retailers.

Cavins said the explosion smashed his orbital and sinus bones, “left several pieces of shrapnel inside the eyeball itself,” causing doctors to remove the eyeball. He will need more surgery to fix his broken bones, reconstructive surgery on his sinus cavity, and he and his wife have both missed work. He sued four distributors and retailers.

The vaping industry contends that many of the incidents are the result of consumers using the wrong chargers. Others involve the more complex “mechanical mods,” which are more customizable than the smaller, cigarette-like e-cigs.

“When used and charged properly, vapor products pose no more of a fire risk than any other product that is powered by lithium-ion batteries, like cellphones or laptops,” Gregory Conley of the American Vaping Association told the Journal.

The growing popularity of e-cigarettes and vaping has led to an enormous increase in children being poisoned by liquid nicotine. Calls to poison control centers have increased by 1,500 percent over the past three years, according to a recently released report in the medical journal, Pediatrics.

Pediatrician Anatole Karpovs with The Children’s Clinic of Southwest Louisiana is sounding the alarm about these lurking dangers.

He says liquid nicotine can come in fruit and candy flavors and packaged in bright colors that are especially appealing to children. Combine that visual temptation with easy access and the result for children can be dangerous poisoning, according to Dr. Karpovs.

“They are not put in child safety containers and they are oftentimes very colorful, they are flavored, and so it can be very, very attractive to a young child who sees this out in the open.”

Researchers from Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s Center for Injury Research and Policy analyzed calls from the National Poison Data System from 2012 to 2015. It showed more than half of those ingesting liquid nicotine were under the age of six.

“They’re not safe,” said Dr. Karpovs. “The children oftentimes get stomach pain and vomiting. They are often referred to emergency room centers or secondary care centers.”

E-cigarettes and vaping products have been touted as a good thing by some, compared with tobacco-burning cigarettes. But Dr. Karpovs says there is no evidence to support they are actually safer and liquid nicotine is still highly addictive.

“Vaping has been presented to people as being somehow less dangerous than cigarette smoking. There’s just no evidence that’s the case,” said Dr. Karpovs.

The National Poison Data System shows an average of 729 children ingest, inhale, or absorb liquid nicotine through the skin or eyes every month.

Dr. Karpovs says if you have tobacco or nicotine products in your home, keep them far away from children.

“Just like any medicine or any kind of dangerous chemical, put it up out of the way of the children, lock it away and do not give them the temptation to get into it,” he said.

Starting in August, the Food and Drug Administration will start regulating electronic nicotine delivery systems. That includes e-cigarettes, vape pens, cigars, hookah tobacco, pipe tobacco, and nicotine gel.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Doctors at The Richard M. Fairbanks Burn Center at Eskenazi Health are sending out a warning to electronic cigarette users after an increase in patients with burns on their legs after leaving the devices in pants pockets.

In the last six months, doctors at Eskenazi Health have treated at least three patients with second and third degree burns. Doctors said all of the patients had an e-cigarette in their pocket, along with change.

Doctors believe the battery in the device is reacting with metal change, causing patients pants to catch on fire and leaving them with serious burns.

Some patients have spent more than six days in the hospital, recovering from the burns.

“They’ve had very significant injuries to their thighs requiring sometimes multiple stage surgery, but certainly skin grafting from those burns,” explained Dr. Rajiv Sood.

At Indy E Cigs, experts said there are many safety nets in place to ensure people don’t get burned, but it’s important for the user to follow those directions.

“You’re gonna smell it. You’re gonna hear it. You’re gonna feel it. It’s the user that ultimately needs to be aware of what’s going on,” said Indy E-Cig founder, Shadi Khoury. “We recommend that you try not to put them in your pocket, that would be the fix all here.”

Doctors at Eskenazi are so concerned about this issue, they’re publishing an article on the topic. It will likely be shared with hospitals across the country.

Traditional cigarettes are really bad for you, but at least they don’t blow up in your face, as e-cigarettes have been doing lately. In one of the most recent cases, an Albany, N.Y., man said his e-cig blew up and knocked him to the ground.

“Like a M80 bomb went off in my mouth,” Kenneth Barbaro said. “When I hit the button, I saw a huge yellow light. The next thing I know, I’m on the floor and my arms are paralyzed.”

Barbaro was hospitalized with burns to his hands, knocked-out teeth, and a splt tongue, he said in a televised report.

“When it blows up in your face, you’re not having a good time,” he said in a televised news report.

More serious

In an even more serious case, an e-cig exploded on April 15, tearing through a man’s eye, smashing two cheekbones, and starting a fire. Joseph Cavins, now blind in one eye, has filed a lawsuit against vaping retailers and distributors, Courthouse News Service reported.

He said he was working at his computer when his vaping device exploded, hitting him in the eye, then hitting the ceiling, and finally landing on top of the computer, where it started a fire.

Cavins, a public school counselor, underwent seven hours of surgery. Doctors removed his left eye and performed surgery to fix broken bones in his face and to repair his sinus cavity.

The problem, according to Cavins’ lawsuit, is that the batteries in vaping devices have “an inherent risk of fire and explosion,” exacerbated by what it says is the cheap construction and poor design of many of the devices.

If the temperature inside the lithium-ion battery builds up high enough, it can cause an explosion that propels the battery “like a bullet or rocket,” Cavins’ suit says.

Several similar cases have been reported in recent months.

But the lithium-ion battery that heats the liquid within an e-cig poses a big safety risk: The batteries have the potential to explode, Dr. Michael Siegel, a tobacco researcher and professor of community health sciences at the Boston University School of Public Health, told Live Science recently.

Last month, a teen in New York City was hospitalized after an e-cig exploded while he was testing it out in a store, according to CBS News. The explosion damaged both of the teen’s eyes.

And in November 2015, an e-cig explosion left a Tennessee man potentially paralyzed, the Huffington Post reported. The explosion fractured the man’s vertebrae and bones in his face, and knocked out a tooth.

In July 2015, a young man in Alabama was airlifted to a hospital and placed on a ventilator after an e-cig blew up in his face. In addition to first-degree burns on his face and chest, the explosion left the young man with a hole in the roof of his mouth that made it difficult for him to eat, according to AOL News.

And earlier last year, a man’s exploding e-cig was powerful enough to shatter glass in the Southern California store he was in, NBC Los Angeles reported. After the blast, the man was rushed to the University of California San Diego Burn Center for treatment.

Why e-cigs explode

In a 2014 report, the U.S. Fire Administration examined e-cig explosions between 2009 and 2014. Lithium-ion batteries in other devices such as cellphones and laptops have also been known to cause fires, the report said. But the design of e-cigs—with their cylindrical shape, and the weakest structural point at their ends—makes these devices more likely than others to explode if the battery fails, according to the report.

The fires start in the battery. While all batteries contain electrolyte solutions (this is an essential part of how they work), the solutions used in lithium-ion batteries are different from those in regular batteries because they are flammable, the report said.

In a lithium-ion battery, the solution can become overheated, reach its boiling point and then rapidly expand and catch fire, causing the battery to explode, according to the report. Laptops and other devices have rigid plastic cases that prevent an exploding battery from doing much damage. But in an e-cig, the explosion can lead the cylindrical container of the device to explode, too, causing the device to “be propelled across the room like a bullet or small rocket,” the report said.

Man Alleges E-Cigarette Explosion Caused Broken Neck Amid Lawsuit Filing Increases

LipsigLawyers.com reports on the details of a CBS News story discussing a man from Colorado Springs, Colorado who was reportedly hospitalized with serious injuries after experiencing an e-cigarette explosion. The release states that the 29-year-old “suffered a broken neck, facial fractures, burns to his mouth, and shattered teeth…” from the explosion. A GoFundMe account which the man’s sister posted to help raise funds for his medical bills stated that he was using an e-cigarette when it exploded in his face.

The sister reportedly told their hometown news station WMC-TV that the incident was heartbreaking to the family. “Any sudden move can cause him to be in a paralyzed state…” and “He’s going to need 24-hour care for a while and constant monitoring from family and friends and loved ones,” she stated. Additionally, she reportedly noted that her brother had undergone spinal surgery to treat some of the damage, which was said to be just the first of a number of surgeries the young man will require.

More people are beginning to move to electronic cigarettes from using traditional cigarettes, thinking that they are making a smart choice for their health. Many, however, have noticed an increase in these types of occurrences as the popularity of e-cigarettes increases. In another similar incident, a 23-year-old man in California was also reported to suffer mouth damage and lost part of his left index finger when physicians were forced to amputate it due to the severity of its wounds following an e-cigarette explosion.

10 key changes for tobacco products sold in the EU

1) Larger and mandatory pictorial health warnings

Graphic health warnings with photos, text and cessation information will cover 65% of the front and the back of cigarette and roll-your-own tobacco (RYO) packs(**).

Depicting the social and health impacts of smoking, the warnings are designed to discourage people from smoking or encourage them to quit. The warnings are grouped in three sets, to be rotated every year, to ensure that they retain their impact for as long as possible. The design of the warnings on cigarettes and RYO tobacco are laid out in a Commission Implementing Decision. See the mock-up of the new cigarette packs.

2) Ban on cigarettes and RYO with characterising flavours

Cigarettes and RYO tobacco products may no longer have characterising flavours such as menthol, vanilla or candy that mask the taste and smell of tobacco(***). In the case of products with more than a 3% market share (e.g. menthol), the ban will apply as of 2020.

A procedure for determining whether a tobacco product has a characterising flavour has been established, and an independent advisory panel will be set up to assist the Commission and Member States in this respect.

3) Replacement of TNCO labelling

The tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide (TNCO) labelling on cigarettes and RYO tobacco will now be replaced with an information message that informs consumers that ‘Tobacco smoke contains over 70 substances known to cause cancer.’ Research has shown that TNCO labelling is misleading to consumers as it makes them believe that some products are less risky to their health. The new information message will more accurately reflect the true health consequences of smoking.

4) No more promotional or misleading packages

Cigarette packs must have a cuboid shape to ensure visibility of the combined health warnings. Slim packs and other irregular shaped packs will no longer be allowed.

Packs containing less than 20 cigarettes are also banned. Packs of 10, which are particularly appealing to young age groups with limited spending power, will therefore, disappear from the market(^).

Promotional and/or misleading features or elements are not allowed on tobacco packages. References to lifestyle benefits, taste or flavourings, special offers, suggestions that a particular product is less harmful than another, or has improved biodegradability or other environmental advantages, will no longer be possible.

5) Mandatory electronic reporting on ingredients

To gather more information on the ingredients contained in tobacco products and their effects on health and addiction, manufacturers and importers of tobacco products are required to report on ingredients in all products they place on the EU market through a standardised electronic format. Certain frequently used substances where there are initial indications to suggest that they contribute to the toxicity, addictiveness or result in characterising flavours in cigarettes and RYO tobacco will be subject to more detailed reporting requirements.

6) Safety and quality requirements for e-cigarettes

The Tobacco Products Directive does not ban e-cigarettes. See here to correct any other misconceptions about what will change. Instead, for the first time, certain safety and quality requirements have been introduced for e-cigarettes containing nicotine.

First and foremost, because nicotine is a toxic substance, the Directive sets maximum nicotine concentrations and maximum volumes for cartridges, tanks and nicotine liquid containers. E-cigarettes should be child-resistant and tamper proof and have a mechanism that ensures refilling without spillage to protect consumers. E-cigarette ingredients must be of high purity and e-cigarettes should deliver the same amount of nicotine for puffs of the same strength and duration.

7) Packaging and labelling rules for e-cigarettes

Health warnings for e-cigarettes become mandatory advising consumers that e-cigarettes contain nicotine and should not be used by non-smokers.

Packaging must also include a list of all ingredients contained in the product, information on the product’s nicotine content and a leaflet setting out instructions for use and information on adverse effects, risk groups and addictiveness and toxicity.

Promotional elements are not allowed on e-cigarette packaging and cross-border advertising and promotion of e-cigarettes is prohibited.

8) Monitoring and reporting of developments related to e-cigarettes

As e-cigarettes are a relatively new product for which evidence is only starting to emerge, the Directive lays down monitoring and reporting requirements for manufacturers and importers, Member States and the Commission:

E-cigarette manufacturers must notify Member States of all products they place on the market and report annually to them on sales volumes, consumer preferences and trends.

Member State authorities will monitor the market for any evidence that e-cigarettes lead to nicotine addiction or to tobacco consumption, especially in young people and non-smokers.

The Commission will also present to the European Parliament and the Council the developments on e-cigarettes in its implementation report to be produced after five years.

9) Possibility to ban cross-border distance sales

EU countries may prohibit cross-border distance sales of tobacco products, which give consumers –including the very young – access to products that do not comply with the Directive. Should an EU country choose this option, the retail outlets in question cannot supply their products to consumers located in that country. Even if a Member State does not ban such sales, retail outlets must register with the competent authorities, both in the country where they are located, and in the country where they plan to sell their products.

10) Measures to combat illicit trade

New measures intended to combat the illegal trade in tobacco products include an EU-wide tracking and tracing system for the legal supply chain and a security feature composed of visible and invisible elements (e.g. holograms) which should help law enforcement bodies, national authorities and consumers detect illicit products.

These measures will be introduced for cigarettes and roll-your-own tobacco in 2019 and to tobacco products other than cigarettes and roll-your-own tobacco in 2024.

Exploding e-cigs will soon be subject to regulatory oversight

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – As the e-cigarette market grew in popularity, so did calls for oversight and regulation following reports from across the country of e-cigs exploding or catching fire.

From January 2015 to January 2016, scientists from the FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products have identified 66 reports of e-cigs overheating, catching fire or exploding.

Dr. Carl Schulman of the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Burn Center said those numbers are probably only scratching the surface of what has become a new phenomenon.

“Locally we’ve seen several patients in the last couple of months who have had burns from electronic cigarettes, particularly exploding and catching fire in their clothing,” said Shulman. “If it is just in their clothing, and they are not using it, then their clothing is catching fire and they are get a bad flame burn where that is, and our two patients actually needed surgery for their burns and if they are actually using it at the time it explodes there have been some reports of actual explosions so they get a blast injury and they catch fire.”

The stories are harrowing. There’s a woman in New York who suffered third-degree burns to her leg after an e-cig caught fire in her pocket while driving; and dramatic surveillance video at a Kentucky gas station caught the moment an e-cig sparked and burst into flames in a customer’s pocket.

In the case of Florida resident Evan Spahlinger, the e-cig he was using exploded. His Fort Lauderdale-based attorney, John Uustal said it burst “into flames in his face, causing him to inhale flames, smoke, and scorching hot air,” and forced him into a medically-induced coma, Uustal filed a product liability lawsuit against Vaping American Made Products LLC, a foreign limited liability company; and Naples, Florida-based Vaping Station LLC.

Company owners and representatives never responded to repeated requests from Local 10 News for a statement about the pending lawsuit.

Uustal said for his client, the explosion and subsequent injuries were like “a nightmare”.

Spahlinger suffered from severe burns on his face and neck with severe internal injuries to his lungs, esophagus and mouth. Luckily Spahlinger survived and is now recovering from his injuries. “I was shocked knowing how burned he was, how good he looks,” said Uustal. “It is a miracle.”

He believes manufacturers and retailers have failed to adequately warn consumers of the potential safety risks and product design defects, “when you buy an e-cigarette nobody says you might be blowing your face off so you must be very careful.”

What is causing e-cig batteries to explode?

According to a 2014 U.S. Fire Administration report most incidents of e-cigs exploding or catching fire occurred while the battery was charging.

“The shape and construction of e-cigarettes can make them more likely than other products with lithium-ion batteries to behave like “flaming rockets” when a battery fails,” explained the report. “Using power sources not approved by the manufacturer to recharge a lithium-ion battery can result in an explosion and fire.”

“It is a relatively new phenomenon. I guess it is in the same trend as all the lithium-ion battery-type devices that are sometimes catching fire and exploding and we are seeing that with e-cigarettes as well,” said Dr. Schulman. “Don’t interchange the devices. Some of these injuries have occurred because people are using different batteries and different chargers and that is causing electrical problems and they are catching fire and exploding.”

“The device has no ventilation,” explained Uustal. “You think about a hoverboard catching fire that’s not great, it is a bad situation, but if you put that in a small cylinder that has only two weak ends, one of those ends is going to blow off if the battery explodes and one of those ends is pointed at someone’s face.”

The 2014 U.S. Fire Administration report goes on to say the devices’ lithium-ion batteries can fail, and noted a need for continued improvements in battery safety designs.

“If the person designing this e-cigarette cared at all for the safety of the user,” said Uustal; “there would be ventilation in the battery compartment, there would be a weak spot on the end that’s facing away from the user so that if something went wrong it would explode out.”

The 2014 report also noted that, “no regulation, code or law applies to the safety of the electronics or batteries in e-cigarettes. While many consumer products are required to be tested by a nationally recognized test laboratory, such as UL, there are no requirements that e-cigarettes be subjected to product safety testing.”

In the vacuum of that regulatory oversight, sales of e-cigs soared.

NEW FEDERAL OVERSIGHT:

In May of 2016, the FDA finalized a rule to extend its regulatory power over e-cigs.

They will be looking at the ingredients, marketing and product design.

A recent FDA/CDC survey found e-cig use by high school kids is up a whopping 900% since 2011.

Before this month’s move by the FDA, there was no federal law prohibiting retailers from selling e-cigs to minors.

Now you will have to be 18 years old and prove it with a photo ID in order to buy an e-cigarette.

An FDA spokesman tells Local 10 News that new rule takes effect this August.

“We have more to do to help protect Americans from the dangers of tobacco and nicotine, especially our youth. As cigarette smoking among those under 18 has fallen, the use of other nicotine products, including e-cigarettes, has taken a drastic leap. All of this is creating a new generation of Americans who are at risk of addiction,” said HHS Secretary Sylvia Burwell.

While Uustal thinks the new regulations are a step in the right direction, he believes those who make and sell e-cigs should have done more to warn consumers of the potential safety risks and should be held accountable for failures in product safety testing.

“These devices are prone to explode even if the user does everything right,” Uustal told the Call Christina team. “If you are designing a device that with a lithium-ion battery that might explode; and create a flaming rocket right into someone’s face you have a certain responsibility when you are making money off these products, to include safety measures. It is not a question of if they are going to get burned, and the day is coming when the first person is going to die and we can prevent that and so we should.”

The Department of Transportation recently banned the devices from carry-on luggage due to the potential safety risk.

“We know from recent incidents that e-cigarettes in checked bags can catch fire during transport,” said Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx. “Fire hazards in flight are particularly dangerous. Banning e-cigarettes from checked bags is a prudent safety measure.”

The U.S. Department of Transportation banned e-cigarettes from checked baggage Thursday.

Passengers and crewmembers will also be prohibited “from charging these devices and their batteries on board the aircraft. However, these devices may continue to be carried in carry-on baggage.”

One industry trade publication states it has created a list of media reported e-cigarette explosions. To date eCig One states it has found 173 e-cig explosion reports.

1. Are e-cigarettes safer than smoking?

Dr McEwen: Yes. Experts think that e-cigarettes are, based on what we know so far, much safer than cigarettes. Smoking is associated with a number of very serious health risks to both the smoker and to others around them. So switching from tobacco to e-cigarettes substantially reduces a major health risk.

2. Is nicotine dangerous?

Dr McEwen: Nicotine doesn’t cause smoking-related diseases, such as cancers and heart disease, but it is addictive. However, there’s a common misconception that you can overdose on nicotine using e-cigarettes. But you are in no danger of poisoning yourself, nor have there been any cases of overdose from inhaling the nicotine-containing fluid that an e-cigarette vaporises, known as e-liquid. So you can use your e-cigarette as often as you need to help manage nicotine withdrawal and urges to smoke.

Much the same as with Nicotine Replacement Therapy, if you do have more nicotine than you’re used to, then you might feel a little nauseous or lightheaded, both of which pass quickly. If this happens, just reduce the level of nicotine in the e-liquid that you buy, or use the e-cigarette less.

3. Do e-cigarettes produce harmful chemicals or blow up?

Dr McEwen: Some studies have found chemicals in e-cigarette vapour that are known to cause health problems. But these studies have tended to use artificial conditions, and when good quality e-cigarettes are used normally (e.g. not overheated), there are far fewer harmful chemicals present in the vapour than in tobacco smoke. If the e-liquid is being overheated it tends to produce an acrid, unpleasant taste – you’ll know if this happens.

As with any rechargeable device, such as mobile phones and laptops, it’s important to charge e-cigarettes with the right charger, and don’t leave it unattended while charging. Ensure that you buy from reputable suppliers and avoid generic charging equipment. There have been reported cases of e-cigarettes causing fires, but far fewer than the number caused by cigarettes, which are the most common cause of lethal house fires.

4. Is it OK to smoke and vape at the same time?

Dr McEwen: There’s no evidence that smoking cigarettes and vaping at the same time is any worse than just smoking tobacco. But the greatest health benefits are seen when people stop smoking tobacco completely, so quitting smoking should be the goal.

Some people manage to switch completely to vaping quickly, while others take a little time. You may have to try a number of different e-cigarettes and e-liquids before you find one that helps you to stop smoking completely, but this is quite normal.

6. Which e-cigarette should I start with?

Dr McEwen: This is very much a personal choice. The refillable tank system e-cigarettes might take a bit of getting used to, but they allow you to use more flavours, and generally deliver more nicotine than e-cigarettes that look like tobacco cigarettes. Users tend to say these types are more satisfying. Specialist e-cigarette retailers can give you advice, and you can also chat to other e-cigarette users on a range of internet forums.

How much nicotine you need will depend upon how much nicotine you’re used to getting from your cigarettes. And, of course, how much nicotine you get from your e-liquid will depend upon the type of e-cigarette that you use and how you use it. As a rough guide, most 20-a-day smokers find that 18mg/ml (1.8 per cent) nicotine is sufficient, so you could start with this and see how you get on.

7. How should I use my e-cigarette to help me to stop smoking?

Dr McEwen: Using an e-cigarette is different from smoking a cigarette. It usually involves taking slower and longer puffs over a longer period of time. This is because e-cigarettes heat a coil in a liquid (think of a kettle). You may find you need to take a few puffs on an e-cigarette at times when you wouldn’t have smoked, but this is nothing to worry about, and the way you use your e-cigarette will develop over time. It’s not like a cigarette, which you smoke from start to finish. With an e-cigarette you can use it once or twice, and then put it away. If you find you’ve got it in your mouth all the time, you might need to use a stronger e-liquid.

If you get a bit of a cough when you use your e-cigarette, this isn’t unusual and it might help to switch from an e-liquid with a high proportion of propylene glycol to one with more vegetable glycol, which can be more soothing.

8. Will e-cigarettes be cheaper for me than smoking?

Dr McEwen: Yes, and you’ll notice savings very quickly compared with buying cigarettes. A starter kit for the tank-style devices can range from £20-70. You’ll then only need to replace the atomiser (heating coil or ‘head’) occasionally for a couple of pounds and, more regularly, buy your e-liquid, which can start at £3.00 for 10 ml. How often you need to change the atomiser will depend on how you use the device, but typically it’ll be around every two weeks or when you get a ‘burnt’ taste or low vapour production.

9. Can I use e-cigarettes in places where I can’t smoke?

Dr McEwen: There are no laws preventing or restricting where you can use e-cigarettes. Some places, such as some sports stadiums and most airports, do not allow vaping while others do. If there are no signs indicating this then you should always ask. But it helps to be respectful when using e-cigarettes around others, especially non-smokers.

10. Is second-hand vapour from e-cigarettes dangerous? How can I protect my children?

Dr McEwen: Unlike second-hand smoke from cigarettes – which is known to cause cancer – there’s no evidence that second-hand e-cigarette vapour is dangerous to others. Some studies have found traces of toxic chemicals in second-hand vapour, but at such low levels that they’re not harmful to those around you. E-cigarettes aren’t recommended for use by non-smokers and children.

In order to prevent accidental poisoning, for example by young children drinking e-liquids, you should store your e-cigarettes and liquids away safely, just as you would with household cleaning products and medicines.
